George Burns’s Omniscient Television
I’ve been watching The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show on Antenna TV. I first found it when the Burns & Allen family were in NY, living at a hotel. Burns & Allen are really funny!
For a brief moment though Antenna TV vanished from my cable system and so I missed some episodes, it returned finally and I found that George and Gracie, along with Ronnie had gone back to California and that a new element was added to the show (maybe it was already there before they went to NY?) at least it was new to me.
Now George Burns in his role as Gracie’s straight man always broke the fourth wall, but suddenly he has a television set which lets him see everyone’s mishaps without their knowledge. All he needed to do was turn the dial to tune into his family and friends as they went about creating chaos. Did this come across as jumping the shark back then?
I know the real answer: George Burns really is God!
